Cr Richard MuttonDubbo councillor Richard Mutton was “very angry” to hear he had been “implicated” in a matter that was before a code of conduct hearing yesterday involving fellow councillor Ben Shields.
The Daily Liberal yesterday received an anonymous tip-off via its website from someone who claimed to have attended the council meeting in which Cr Shields allegedly called one of his colleagues a “pathetic disgrace”.
“I was at the council meeting
that Cr Shields called Richard Mutton a ‘pathetic disgrace’,” the email read.
The email went on to claim the issue of cancer had been raised at the meeting, which was eventually stopped by Mayor Allan Smith following heated exchanges.
“Cr Barnard (was) in tears, and I could see Cr Reynolds was nearly in tears as well”, the email read.
The Daily Liberal contacted Cr Mutton to verify the claim.
“I’m very angry to hear you’ve had an anonymous tip-off,” Cr Mutton said.
“It is a private matter … it’s certainly not the business of the public.”
The last time a councillor was brought before the committee it cost the city between $10,000 and $12,000.
Council’s general manager Mark Riley would not comment on the cost of yesterday’s hearing.
Cr Mutton was not happy to have been named in the latest code of conduct matter.
“I’m extremely unhappy that I’ve been implicated in this,” he said.
Cr Shields yesterday faced an independent Conduct Review Committee along with the councillor he was alleged to have called a “pathetic disgrace” at a council meeting in December.
The committee was still deliberating on its verdict yesterday afternoon.
The Daily Liberal understands if the committee finds Cr Shields breached the code of conduct his fellow councillors will decide his punishment at next month’s council meeting.
