Claire Hargreaves takes aim from the free throw line for the Rams against Queanbeyan Yowies on Saturday at Sports World. The Dubbo Rams women are still in the race for a place in the State League semi-finals after an exciting 71-67 win over the Queanbeyan Yowies at the Woolshed in Dubbo on Saturday night.
With eight wins from 12 games they have 20 points and are equal fourth on the competition ladder with Wagga Blaze (8-4) and are just behind leaders Shoalhaven Tigers (23), Central Coast Crusaders and Queanbeyan Yowies (22).
Shannon Mathes was a standout with a game-high 22 points against the Yowies and her ability to out-rebound her much taller opponents and all-round enthusiasm went a long way in securing a Dubbo win.
Cara Gordon, in her best game to date, stepped up when required in the final quarter with two big three-pointers to swing the game in the Rams’ favour.
Other pointscorers were Claire Hargreaves 14, Merle Hall 10, Melissa Lee 6 and Kim Naden with two.
The Rams started well enough, being up 17-11 at the first break but the Yowies showed why they are Pool B semi-final aspirants with a dominating 10 minutes that saw them out-score the home team by 19-8 and went to the main break up 30-25.
They picked up another point in the third quarter before the Rams let rip in the final 10 minutes and won the quarter 29-19 to grab the lead and stay there at the final siren.
For the Yowies, Belinda Gregory had a great game with 20 points, while Kristen Langhom made 14.
The fightback from the Rams was significant, especially with Hall and Gordon racking up five fouls and Melissa Lee on her last.
The Western Star Rams women have a double-header this week, playing sixth-placed Penrith Panthers from 5pm at Sports World, and back on Sunday against Wagga Wagga Blaze (4th) at noon.
