Madison Reynolds with Jayronray after winning the Daily Liberal Pace at the TAB meeting in Dubbo on Wednesday night.Teenage reinsman Madison Reynolds came up with one of his best drives in a short career to steer Jayronray to victory in The Daily Liberal NSW State Bred Bonus 3YO Pace over 2120 metres at the showground paceway on Wednesday night.
The St John’s College student brought up win number five with a gelding that is trained by his father Peter Reynolds and raced by a syndicate of Sydney-based owners.
Jayronray started at $7.90 and in a driving finish was over the top of $2.80 favourite Drum Beat (Amanda Turnbull) winning by 2-1/4 metres with Man of Art ($5.60, James Sutton) a neck away third.
Starting from the second line out of the mobile in gate 10, Reynolds was forced to bide his time being third last early before hunting up on the pegs to save his horse for the run home.
“I was hoping that I’d get some room and have a shot at them late and as it turned out I got it,” Reynolds said.
“It was a fairly easy run early but when you decide to stay close to the pegs you’re always going to need things to go your way.
“As it turned out in the straight I was able to find some room and get outside Amanda Turnbull (on Drum Beat) to run home for the win.”
Drum Beat looked all over the winner as heads were turned for home but the filly didn’t finish off her race as expected and found Jayronray too good on the night.
Peter Reynolds said he had a good feeling about his three-year-old leading into the race.
“I said to the owners that he felt the best he has been for ages. We’ve had a lot of trouble with him with his muscles tying up but he was more easy in his work and it showed here tonight,” the trainer said.
The winner’s time for the journey was 2:44.67 with a mile rate of 2:04.9. Jayronray has now won four of his 22 starts.
Meanwhile, Peter Reynolds will be watching next Wednesday night’s TAB meeting from Bathurst with interest when his former mare Sweet Carolina goes around in a race for new trainer-driver Steve Turnbull.
The wayward mare was sent on the truck with the Turnbull clan after to The Lagoon after the previous Dubbo meeting and duly won as the favourite first up at Bathurst.
