With late August firming as the odds on favourite for the federal election Parkes candidates are gearing up for the race to the finish.
Speculation is running rife that Prime Minister Julia Gillard will make an announcement on the date for the federal election sometime this week.
August 21 and 28 as well as September 4 are the dates being backed by many including Parkes MP Mark Coulton.
“There is the possibility that it will be called next weekend, but it might not be until October,” he said.
“My feeling is the 21st or 28th of August.”
Greens candidate Matt Parmeter agreed it was time to start preparing for the election.
“All the speculation is that it will come at the end of August. We all know that an election is imminent,” he said.
“We are ready and gearing up for when it is called.”
Both candidates said they were ready to focus on the big issues, which would be raised in the election.
“Financial management, the state of debt and the mining tax will be the big issues,” Mr Coulton said.
“In Parkes the people I have spoken to are concerned about money being wasted and the commitment to regional Australia.”
Mr Parmeter said there was one issue he would definitely be campaigning on.
“Renewable energy and climate change is the one thing I want to push in the election,” he said.
“We will be announcing this policy within weeks regardless of when the election is called.”
At the moment Mr Coulton and Mr Parmeter are the only confirmed candidates for the seat of Parkes.
The local Labor branch has not yet announced a candidate but the ALP Orana Branch earlier this month told the Daily Liberal a candidate would be announced in early August.
“The campaign team is ready now and we have been for sometime. We’ll announce our candidate at a time that suits us,” branch vice president Joe Knagge said.
There is another possible candidate for Parkes in the works with former political staffer John Clements telling the Daily Liberal in June he was not ruling out standing as an independent.
